Choosing between a deodorant and an antiperspirant can be challenging, but understanding the differences between these two products can greatly influence your comfort and personal hygiene. Although often used interchangeably, these products have distinct functions. In this article, we will explore the fundamental differences between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Main functions
The primary function of a deodorant is to neutralize or mask body odors caused by bacteria that break down sweat. Deodorants contain antibacterial agents to reduce bacteria on the skin and fragrances to mask unpleasant odors.
Unlike deodorants, antiperspirants aim to reduce or block sweating. Traditional antiperspirants contain aluminum salts that form a temporary plug in the sweat glands, preventing sweat from reaching the skin's surface.
An aluminum-free antiperspirant uses alternative ingredients to absorb moisture and reduce odors without blocking the sweat glands. The term "antiperspirant" is often associated with aluminum, but those that do not contain this ingredient are technically closer to deodorants, as they do not reduce sweat production but focus on odor management and moisture absorption.
What about your KIIMA deodorant?
KIIMA has chosen to categorize all partner deodorants under the term “deodorant,” even though some products might be considered antiperspirants by others due to certain moisture-absorbing functions. Note that all products offered by KIIMA and its partners are safe for health and the environment. Find the ingredients over here!
Duration of effectiveness
The effectiveness of a deodorant can vary from a few hours to all day, depending on the formulation and the user's activity level. It needs to be applied regularly to maintain its effectiveness.
Antiperspirants generally offer longer protection, lasting up to 24 hours or more. Their effect can diminish over time due to natural sweat production and daily activities.
Side effects
Both deodorants and antiperspirants can cause irritation in some people, mainly due to fragrances, antibacterial ingredients, or aluminum salts. Natural formulations typically reduce the risk of irritation.
The use of aluminum salts in antiperspirants is a topic of debate. There are concerns about the long-term effects of using aluminum salts, although research on this topic is still ongoing. This is why natural deodorants are becoming increasingly popular due to their lower environmental impact and the absence of potentially harmful chemicals.
In summary, the choice between a deodorant and an antiperspirant depends on your personal needs and preferences. If you are looking to simply mask odors and stay fresh, a deodorant is sufficient. However, if you want to reduce the amount of sweat produced, an antiperspirant will be more effective. Whatever your choice, it is important to read the labels and choose products that suit your skin type and lifestyle. By understanding the differences between these two types of products, you can make an informed choice for your personal hygiene. 💚

I purchased your refillable deodorant applicator, as I liked the idea of a refillable applicator, and in fact I do love the container itself; it’s well-made and looks as though it would last a long time. I won’t be buying any refills, though, as the deodorant does not help with wetness.
I’m writing in hopes that you might consider making an actual antiperspirant for those of us who really do need it for sweat reduction. I have tried antiperspirants that don’t contain aluminium, and found them unsatisfactory, and I know others who feel the same.
As far as I know, there is no medical study that has shown that aluminium has a harmful effect on people, and I feel there would be a market for those of us who need more than the deodorant, yet want to be environmentally responsible – I know I have felt very ignored in this area.
Is there a way to make with good ingredients, made in an environmentally friendly way, that does have aluminium for those of us who need it?
Thank you.
